Bergen performed with the newsboy dummy while attending Northwestern University and eventually left college to tour vaudeville. With the decline of vaudeville during the Great Depression, Bergen moved into night spots like New York’s trendy Rainbow Room but feared his friend wouldn’t be appreciated by high society. So he gave Charlie a monocle and top hat and a "man about town" was born. Following a three-month guest stint on Rudy Vallee’s show, Edgar Bergen was signed as headliner of The Chase and Sanborn Hour. The series featured the adventures of San Francisco-based importer-turned-sleuth Gregory Hood with his friend and ally, attorney Sanderson Taylor. The program lasted a year in its initial run but was resurrected several times in a variety of time spots, often as a summer replacement.
