Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State Earn Weekly Football Honors

Illini’s Bryant, Hawkeyes’ Stevens, Huskers’ Barney Jr., along with Buckeyes’ Howard and Simon garner accolades

Co-Offensive Players of the Week

Pat Bryant, Illinois

WR – Sr. – Jacksonville, Fla. – Atlantic Coast

  • Caught the game-winning touchdown with 0:04 remaining as part of a 197-yard, seven-reception performance to lead No. 24 Illinois to a 38-31 win at Rutgers
  • Scored his third game-winning touchdown in the final minute or overtime this season, the most in the nation
  • Surpassed 2,000 receiving yards for his career on the game-winning touchdown
  • Last Illinois Offensive Player of the Week honoree: Luke Altmyer (Sept. 23, 2024)

 

Will Howard, Ohio State

QB – Gr. – Downington, Pa. – Downington West

  • Extended his school single season and career records with his sixth game with a completion percentage of at least 80 percent by completing 22 of 26 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the win over No. 5 Indiana
  • Found Emeka Egbuka on an 11-yard touchdown score after Indiana had taken a 7-0 lead, and then he hit Jelani Thurman with a one-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-7
  • Leads the nation in completion percentage at 74.0

Defensive Player of the Week

Cody Simon, Ohio State

LB – Gr. – Jersey City, N.J. – St. Peter’s Prep

  • Led the Buckeyes’ defensive effort against Indiana’s 15th-ranked offensive unit with a game-high 10 tackles, including 2.5 quarterback sacks, and a forced fumble
  • The 10-tackle game was Simon’s third game this season with 10 tackles and his 2.5 sacks represented a career high for a single game
  • Helped the Buckeyes to a season-high tying five quarterback sacks on the afternoon

Special Teams Player of the Week

Drew Stevens, Iowa

K – Jr. – North Augusta, S.C. – North Augusta

  • Tied an Iowa program record set in 2004 and an SECU Stadium record, making all five field goals in Iowa’s 29-13 road win at Maryland
  • Tied a career-high with a 54-yarder and made two from 50+, becoming the first Iowa player to make multiple from 50+ since 1998
  • He now has seven career makes from 50+ yards, a school record and is 17-of-20 on attempts this season and is the first player to ever make two from 50+ against Maryland

Freshman of the Week

Jacory Barney Jr., Nebraska

WR – Florida City, Fla. – Palmetto

  • Set career highs with nine receptions for 85 yards, bettering his previous highs of eight catches and 78 yards, in Nebraska’s win against Wisconsin
  • Rushed for 11 yards and had 54 yards in returns for 150 all-purpose yards
  • Set the tone with a 45-yard kickoff return to open the game, setting up a Husker scoring drive in the opening minutes
  • Last Nebraska Freshman of the Week honoree: Dylan Raiola (Sept. 2, 2024)

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Player of the Week
Emily Londot, Ohio State
Gr. – OPP – Utica, Ohio – Master’s: Kinesiology

  • Led the Buckeyes to a pair of wins in their final home weekend of the season against RV Washington and Indiana
  • Londot averaged 4.50 kills/set, hitting nearly .400, as well as 5.13 points/set, 2.88 digs/set and 0.63 blocks/set
  • In the sweep of Washington, Londot led all players with 16 kills and added nine digs, two aces and two blocks
  • In the win against Indiana, Londot recorded her sixth 20-kill match of the season and hit .405. She added 14 digs for her 16th double-double of the season, and also recorded a trio of blocks. Londot had eight kills in the fourth set to help the Buckeyes force a fifth set and then was 3-of-3 in the fifth set to help the team hit .833 in the set

Defensive Player of the Week
Gillian Grimes, Penn State
Jr. – L – Westchester, Ill. – Major: Criminology

  • Grimes averaged 5.29 digs/set and chipped in with 1.43 assists/set in No. 4 Penn State’s home wins over No. 8 Purdue and RV Washington
  • Racked up 20 digs in just three sets in the Nittany Lions’ sweep of nationally-ranked Purdue on Thursday, helping hold the Boilermakers to .142 hitting
  • Added 17 digs and contributed an ace in a 3-1 win over Washington on Sunday, helping hold the Huskies to .124 hitting
  • Grimes tallied five assists in both matches

Co-Setter of the Week
Bergen Reilly, Nebraska
So. – S – Sioux Falls, S.D. – Major: Business and Law

  • Set the Huskers to two sweeps last week over Iowa and No. 6 Wisconsin, averaging 12.83 assists per set with 11 digs, five kills, four blocks and two aces
  • Reilly set the Huskers to a combined .355 hitting percentage on the week, including .472 at Iowa and .259 against Wisconsin
  • Reilly recorded 41 assists, eight digs, three kills, three blocks and two aces in the win at Iowa
  • Followed up that outing with 36 assists, three digs, two kills and a block against Wisconsin to earn the season sweep over the Badgers

  • Averaged 11.29 assists, 2.71 digs, 1.29 blocks, and 1.29 kills per set in No. 4 Penn State’s home wins over No. 8 Purdue and RV Washington
  • In the sweep over the nationally-ranked Boilermakers on Thursday, Starck racked up 38 assists, 10 digs, five blocks, and three kills for her 12th double-double of the season
  • Followed that outing with 41 assists, nine digs, four blocks and six kills in a 3-1 win over Washington on Sunday

Freshman of the Week
Emmi Sellman, Ohio State
OH – Burtonsville, Md. – Major: Exploration

  • Helped lead the Buckeyes to a pair of wins vs. Washington and Indiana this past weekend by averaging 3.63 kills/set, 1.88 digs/set and 0.50 blocks/set
  • In the sweep of Washington, Sellman finished with 10 kills, six digs, a pair of aces and a block
  • In the win against Indiana, she totaled 19 kills, nine digs and three blocks. In the fifth set, Sellman was a perfect 5-of-5 to help the team to a .833 hitting percentage in the deciding set. She played a role in all four points to end the match, including recording the kill on match point

MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Player of the Week
John Tonje, Wisconsin
G – Grad. – 6-7 – North Omaha, Neb. – Omaha Central

  • Averaged 22.3 points on .526 shooting from the field and .958 from the free throw line to lead the Badgers to a 3-0 week
  • Earned Greenbrier Tip-Off MVP honors after tallying 33 points and seven rebounds in an 81-75 win over Pitt in the title game
  • First Division I player to score 33 or more against two high major opponents in the month of November over the last 15 years
  • Garners his second consecutive Player of the Week award
  • Last Wisconsin Player of the Week: John Tonje (Nov. 18, 2024)

 

Freshman of the Week
Derik Queen, Maryland
F – 6-10 – Baltimore, Md. – Monteverde Academy

  • Posted 16.0 points on .650 shooting from the field and 8.5 rebounds as Maryland claimed a pair of wins
  • Named Empire Classic MVP after a 22 point, 11 rebound, five assist performance in a 76-75 comeback win over Villanova
  • Scored 18 points, including the game-tying and game-winning free throws with 19 seconds to play in the victory
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week award

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Player of the Week
Kendall Bostic, Illinois
5th-Yr. – Forward – Kokomo, Ind. – Northwestern
• Averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 83.9 percent from the field
• Put up 25 points, going 11-for-13 from the field, and 12 rebounds against Le Moyne for the 36th double-double of her career
• Had a career-high 31 points with eight rebounds versus Oregon State
• Earns her first Big Ten Player of the Week award

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll
Lauren Betts, UCLA: Recorded her third straight double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) in UCLA’s win over No. 1 South Carolina
Gracie Merkle, PSU: Averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds during a pair of Penn State victories

 

Freshman of the Week
Lana McCarthy, Purdue
Forward – Bedford, N.H. – Bedford
• Posted her second double-double of her career behind 12 points and 10 boards against Bellarmine
• Became the first Boilermaker rookie since the 2004-05 season to record multiple double-doubles in a season
• Matched her career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting with five rebounds versus UT Arlington
• Collects her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week laurel
