Baseball superlatives: MLB Network Radio’s favorite players

Who are the best players in the MLB? We polled nine MLB Network Radio hosts to find out. Take a look at the results:

Miguel Cabrera beat out Bryce Harper, Paul Goldschmidt and Mike Trout as “Best Hitter.” The Detroit Tigers first baseman and two-time American League MVP has a career .321 batting average and 408 home runs. He became the league’s first Triple Crown winner in 45 seasons in 2012, just the 17th player ever to complete that achievement.

Clayton Kershaw was voted “Best Pitcher: by a landslide over Zack Greinke and Jake Arrieta. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has a career record of 114-56, including an 88-33 record over the past five seasons of pure dominance. Kershaw, who also has a National League MVP award under his belt, became the first pitcher in MLB history to lead the league in ERA for four consecutive years from 2011 to 2014.

Andrelton Simmons dazzles at shortstop and was voted “Best Fielder,” beating out stiff competition in Manny Machado, Salvador Perez and Adeiny Hechavarria. Simmons is a two-time Gold Glove winner in his young four-year career. Simmons was traded by the Atlanta Braves over the offseason to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy beat out Chicago Cubs’ Joe Maddon and Baltimore Orioles’ Buck Showalter as the league’s best manager. Bochy’s led the Giants to three out of the last six World Series titles. He was named NL Manager of the Year in 1996 when he was with the San Diego Padres.

Theo Epstein was voted “Best Executive” for his success with the Cubs this past season. Dave Dombrowski, Brian Sabean and John Mozeliak were also in the running. As President of Baseball Operations, Epstein put together a Cubs roster that won 97 games and earned the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2008. After smooth offseason moves like signing outfielder Jason Heyward and starting pitcher John Lackey, on paper the Cubs look like the best team in the National League.

Mike Trout was voted the league’s most exciting player, beating out Harper and Nolan Arenado by a wide margin. In four seasons in the majors, the Angels star has four All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards and finished in the top two of AL MVP voting each year, winning the award in 2014. Trout’s combination of offensive acumen and defensive prowess makes him the most exciting young player in the MLB.
