“I intend to do everything I can to make certain [Hillary Clinton] will be the next president of the United States,” Bernie Sanders declared before a crowd Tuesday at his first Hillary Clinton rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A little under two weeks before the start of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Sanders formally endorsed his former rival praising her ability to embrace progressive ideals.
“Hillary Clinton understands that we must fix an economy in America that is rigged and that sends almost all new wealth and income to the top one percent,” Sanders told the crowd. “Hillary Clinton understands that if someone in America works 40 hours a week, that person should not be living in poverty. She believes that we should raise the minimum wage to a living wage.”
Sanders added, “if you don’t believe this election is important, take a moment to think about the Supreme Court justices that Donald Trump will nominate, and what that means to civil liberties, equal rights and the future of our country.”
Former Penn. Gov. Ed Rendell stressed in an interview with Dean Obedilliah the importance of Sanders’ endorsement and the need for his supporters to vote for Clinton over an alternative third party candidate.
“People who voted for Bernie who are thinking of casting their vote for the Green Party candidate should be told that essentially they’re voting for Donald Trump,” Rendell warned. “If you really care about the things that Bernie’s talked about like getting rid of Citizens United, like the $15 minute wage, like significant progress in making college more affordable, like doing something about income inequality, like taxing the 1% at the level they deserve to be taxed — those things are all going to be advanced by Hillary Clinton.”
Clinton and the Democratic party has already made clear their intention to embrace many of Sanders’ campaign promises.
“I am happy to tell you that at the Democratic Platform Committee which ended Sunday night in Orlando, there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party,” Sanders said. “Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton presidency – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen.”
