In a perfect world, safety Adrian Amos would remain with the Chicago Bears.

That’s the team that made him a fifth-round draft pick from Penn State in 2015. That’s also the team with which he established himself as one of the NFL’s better players at his position.

‘I would like to be back, but the business part of it, it’s complicated sometimes’

But Amos – who in his career has 274 tackles, three interceptions and a pair of sacks – could find himself elsewhere as he approaches free agency with an expiring contract.

“I would like to be back, but the business part of it, it’s complicated sometimes,” Amos told Bob Papa and Ed McCaffrey on The Opening Drive. “Things still could happen, but I have to be prepared for all scenarios. I’m not writing anything off and that was the team I was drafted to as well. There could be a chance that I’m back and there could be a chance I’m anywhere. That’s the crazy thing about this situation where my contract’s up so anything could really happen. I’m just sitting back and really waiting to see what happens.”

‘Obviously (Denver) would be a fit where I know the defense and things like that’

One possible landing spot that would seem logical is the Denver Broncos, whose new head coach is Vic Fangio, Amos’ former defensive coordinator with the Bears.

“First and foremost, I’m a Bear right now, so that’s a main focus early on. But if that doesn’t work out, then I have to explore what team fits me best.”

“I don’t know, but obviously that would be a fit where I know the defense and things like that,” Amos said. “But it’s not something that I’m pinpointing like, ‘Hey, I want to go there,’ or anything like that. I’m just keeping all options open. First and foremost, I’m a Bear right now, so that’s a main focus early on. But if that doesn’t work out, then I have to explore what team fits me best, what team gives me the best opportunity to take care of my family as well as progress on the football field.

‘Chicago has been talking back and forth, they want me back’

“At this point it’s really the waiting game. I want to be back in Chicago. Chicago has been talking back and forth, they want me back. But we’ll see how things shake out. Nothing is certain right now. It’s still a little early. Over the next couple weeks, I guess we’ll find out a lot more.”

The Bears obviously know what sort of player they’d be getting if they decided to retain Amos. What should another team expect?

‘I like to be physical, but I’m also good in coverage’

“I would say a physical player,” Amos said. “I like to be physical, but I’m also good in coverage. I think an underrated part of my game is I can cover tight ends. I have a background in covering slots, as I was a nickel. So it just depends on what the defense causes me to do. If I’m asked to play in the box more, I feel like I can play in the box. And if I’m asked to play in the back end, I can do that as well. So I’d say that I’m versatile.”
