Headlined by Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd x Swedish House Mafia (who replaced Ye), the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival returned to Indio, CA, for the first time since 2019. Weekend 1 was jam-packed with explosive performances, special guests, and new music. Here’s everything you need to know that happened with your favorite SiriusXM Hits 1 artists.
Harry Styles shared the stage (and childhood memories) with Shania Twain
Hot off the release of his latest single, “As It Was,” Harry Styles — Friday night’s headliner — took the stage in a sparkly jumpsuit to share a few tracks off his upcoming album, Harry’s House, revisit a One Direction classic, and invite the legendary Shania Twain to join him for a couple duets. The two sang her classics “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “You’re Still the One” together, and Styles shared that he owed a lot of his talent to Twain.
“He’s up there performing, he sings ‘What Makes You Beautiful,’ the One Direction song. And then all of a sudden, he looks confused on stage, and comes rising into the air [is] Shania Twain,” Nicole Ryan recapped on SiriusXM Hits 1’s (Ch.2) Morning Mash Up. “She’s in equally as sparkly of an outfit as he is wearing, and they sit down, they hug, they sit down on two stools, and basically discuss that she was basically the person who taught him how to sing.”
“This lady taught me to sing,” Styles said on stage during the performance, remembering childhood times spent in the car with his mom listening to Twain’s music. “She also taught me that men are trash.”
Billie Eilish’s set featured not one but four special guests
It came as no surprise to anybody when Saturday’s headliner Billie Eilish brought her brother and longtime musical partner FINNEAS on stage with her. Having originally made her Coachella back in 2018, Eilish — who already has seven GRAMMYs and an Oscar — was the festival’s youngest-ever headliner, and she made sure to share the experience with a variety of other artists. In addition to FINNEAS for “I Love You,” Eilish also invited Damon Albarn (Blur and Gorillaz) to join her for “Getting Older”; Pos (De La Soul) to sing his part of Gorillaz’s “Feel Good Inc.”; and Khalid to revisit their 2018 single, “Lovely.”
“This is so weird. I should not be headlining this s***,” Eilish said when she took the stage. “But I’m so f****** grateful that I’m here, and that you guys are all here. This is such a dream come true. I feel crazy.”
At the end of her set, she even apologized for not being Beyoncé.
Megan Thee Stallion premiered a new diss track
In a tweet from April 7, Megan Thee Stallion warned, “I got this song that I recorded and every time I play it for a woman they start jumping and clapping. I think I wanna perform it at Coachella for the first time before I actually drop it.” She then used her Saturday set in the desert to premiere a brand new diss track dedicated “to whom it may the f*** concern.” The track (reportedly titled “You’s a Bitch”) samples Jodeci and Wu-Tang’s “Freak’n You Remix.”
The rest of her set included hit singles “Body,” “Savage,” “Eat It,” “WAP,” and “Sweetest Pie.”
“I go by the name of Megan Thee Stallion, aka the Hot Girl Coach,” she told the audience, “And if you ain’t know about me, ask your boo about me.”
Doja Cat previewed the Elvis soundtrack
In addition to tracks from her albums Planet Her and Hot Pink, Doja Cat treated fans to three never-before-heard songs, including “Vegas” from the upcoming soundtrack to the Baz Luhrmann film, Elvis. Tyga joined her for a performance of “Juicy” as did Rico Nasty for a performance of “Tia Tamera” — a reversal of when she joined him for his Coachella set in 2019 for the same song.
Perhaps most importantly, though, Doja Cat announced the return of the Mexican Pizza at Taco Bell.
Måneskin covered Britney Spears
Catapulted into the international spotlight after winning Eurovision 2021, Italian rock band Måneskin — most known in the U.S. for their cover of the Four Seasons’ “Beggin'” — took the Coachella stage on Sunday night. Their set featured covers of Britney Spears‘s “Womanizer” and Iggy Pop‘s “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” (Iggy Pop worked with the band last year to record a duet version of their single “I Wanna Be Your Slave.”)
