Cory Booker: Trump is ‘trying to insinuate and instigate fear mongering’

The importance of the final “super” primary day of the election season has been diminished after “an Associated Press survey of Democratic superdelegates” released Monday determined that Hillary Clinton had secured enough support to become the presumptive Democratic nominee. While Bernie Sanders vowed to crowds in San Francisco that he will keep the fight going until the convention, this marked a major turning point in the hotly contested race.

As Clinton looks toward the general election, she’s been starting to make a stark contrast between herself and her presumptive opponent Donald Trump. National surrogate Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey spoke with Mayor Philip Levine about the state of the race and his thoughts on the presumptive Republican nominee.

“Donald Trump seems so clearly trying to insinuate and instigate fear mongering,” Booker added. “This is the kind of thing that we really need to renounce, not elevate.”

Booker described the feeling of “disbelief” from many Latinos in his home state over the comments made by Trump since the start of his campaign. He also expressed his own feeling of astonishment over Trump’s recent remarks about Judge Gonzalo Curiel calling it “bigoted thinking.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told Levine he found Trump’s rhetoric “unacceptable.” Adding, “I hope people see not only the explicit racism, but the implicit racism that Donald Trump is trying to use to turn us against each other.”

Critical responses to Trump’s recent commentary about Cruiel have not been exclusive to the Democratic side. Sen. Lindsey Graham has called on Republicans to rescind their endorsements of Donald Trump. On Tuesday, Speaker Paul Ryan chimed in on Trump’s recent statements about Curiel.

“Claiming a person can’t do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment,” Ryan said. “I think that should be absolutely disavowed. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Ryan continued by saying, “But do I believe that Hillary Clinton is the answer? No, I do not.”
