Dan Rather: Donald Trump could still win despite ‘tawdry’ debate

“My opinion is that by surviving Sunday and living to fight another day, Donald Trump keeps his hopes alive,” Dan Rather said on his Radio Andy show.

Did Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton win Sunday night’s presidential debate? Veteran journalist Dan Rather thinks trying to answer that question is “a fool’s mission.”

“It’s so frequently in the eye of the beholder,” he said Tuesday on Dan Rather’s America. “What did I think? I think it was nasty, tawdry, unworthy of us as a people, as a country, as a society. And I also, quite frankly, I thought a long stretch was just outright boring. No, I didn’t have to take NoDoz to stay awake, but I can understand why it might be narcolepsy-inducing for some people. So that’s my own take on it.”

Despite the dent in the Republican’s armor after the so-called “Trump Tapes” leaked days before the debate, Rather said the businessman is still “viable as a candidate.”

Still, “My opinion is that by surviving Sunday and living to fight another day, Donald Trump keeps his hopes alive,” Rather explained. “I’m not of the school who says it’s now impossible for him to win. Unlikely to win? You could say that. But there’s still a ways to go and given everything that’s happened so far — all these surprises, bombshells such as what we’ll call the sex tapes of Donald Trump — who knows what’s ahead between now and election day.”

Dan Rather’s America airs Tuesdays at 10 a.m. ET on Radio Andy (Ch. 102).
