Dasha Explains the Meaning Behind ‘Didn’t I’ and How It Connects to Her Other Songs
“We’re building a whole world around this stuff,” Dasha said of the storyline behind her three singles.
“I like to describe ‘Didn’t I’ as part three,” Dasha explained to SiriusXM Hits 1 LA hosts Tony Fly and Symon about her latest song’s relationship to her previous two singles, “Austin” and “King of California.”
“First it’s ‘Austin,’ then it’s ‘King of California,’ like, 40 years later … So, those songs connect,” she continued. “And then ‘Didn’t I’ is sort of like part three, the closer of me actually going back and backsliding. ‘Cause at the end of ‘King California,’ I go back, find him at that bar, and I’m like, ‘Wait, hold on.'”
The singles “Austin” and “King of California” both came from Dasha’s debut country album, “What Happens Now?” (February 2024). “Austin” became a viral hit on TikTok in March 2024 and later peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2024.
“We’re building a whole world around this stuff,” Dasha said of the storyline connecting the three songs. “And so ‘Didn’t I’ is just the backsliders’ anthem, you know? Like, ‘Oops. Didn’t I break up with you and slam your door and delete all your pictures and now am I naked in your bed? Oops, didn’t I? Hehe.'”
