Democrats host ‘United Together’ theme as DNC chair resigns

The Democrats headed into Philadelphia hoping to unite the party that had been badly divided during the primary process. The theme of the first evening of the Democratic National Convention, “United Together,” features speeches by Hillary Clinton‘s primary challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders and First Lady Michelle Obama. Rumored vice presidential picks Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Cory Booker will also speak Monday evening.

But an email dump by WikiLeaks — which made 20,000 internal party emails public — seemed to paint a picture of DNC’s primary process that favored Clinton, feeding into a narrative long touted in the media by Sanders.

“I mean, there’s no question to my mind and I think no question to any objective observer’s mind that the DNC was supporting Hillary Clinton, was in opposition to our campaign. So, I’m not quite shocked by this,” Sanders told Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union. “And that is why many, many months ago, I made it clear that I thought Debbie Wasserman Schultz should resign…”

On Sunday, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced she will resign from her post at the conclusion of the convention in Philadelphia. Donna Brazile was named interim chair.  Despite her upcoming resignation, Wasserman Schultz is still expected to gavel in the convention on Monday.

Perhaps in a preview of what’s to come with the first gavel, Wasserman Schultz was booed while speaking at a delegation breakfast Monday morning.

Protests, mainly led by Sanders’ supporters, are expected to be larger, louder and more frequent than in Cleveland.
