Dr. Ben Carson told SiriusXM Urban View host Armstrong Williams during a recent town hall he believes “poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind.”

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary added, “You take somebody who has the right mindset, you can take everything from them and put them on the street and I guarantee you, in a little while, they’ll be right back up there. And you take somebody with the wrong mindset, you can give them everything in the world and they’ll work their way back down to the bottom.”

He also added it’s the responsibility of parents to instill positive thinking and values in their children to prevent a future life of poverty.

“You have to instill into that child the mindset of a winner if they’re likely to become a winner,” Carson said.

“If you’re always telling them they’re no good, they’re rotten, they hear that constantly, they see that around them. Then, it shouldn’t surprise anybody that that’s where the vast majority of them are going to go.”
