Famke Janssen slams ‘sexism’ of new X-Men movies: ‘The men are allowed to be both ages’

Another Marvel movie means another conversation about women’s inclusion in the comic book universe.

Famke Janssen starred as telepathic mutant Jean Grey in the first three X-Men blockbusters. But besides a super brief cameo in 2014’s Days of Future Past, she’s been absent from the franchise’s time-hopping sequels — unlike original actors Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, who shared the screen with younger versions of their characters played by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy.

So when X-Men: Apocalypse soars into theaters May 27, Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner will appear as Grey solo.

“I can’t wait to see the movie and see what she’s done with it … I’m actually really excited about it,” Janssen, 51, said Thursday on EW Morning Live while promoting her new film Jack of the Red Hearts. “Although, women is interesting, because they’re replaced and the older versions — or the more mature, whatever the politically correct version of that is — are never to be seen again, whereas the men are allowed to be both ages.

“Yeah, what’s that all about?” asked host Dalton Ross.

“Sexism,” she replied. “I think that I should be back along with my younger version in the way that we’ve seen it with Magneto and Professor X.”

So has Janssen raised the issue with the studio?

“Yes, I have. I have not heard any feedback on that,” she replied with a laugh. “Other than total radio silence.”
