Carrie Fisher, known most for her iconic portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, died Tuesday at the age of 60, a family spokesperson confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.
Fisher’s death comes just days after she suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles. A statement was released by Simon Halls, the family spokesperson, on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd.
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” the statement read. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill tweeted his grief shortly after Fisher’s death.

Back in spring 2015, Fisher spoke with EW’s Anthony Breznican about the Star Wars and the lasting impact that the Princess Leia role had on her life.
Fisher was born in Beverly Hills, California to singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds in 1956. While she was best known for the Star Wars films, Fisher was also an award-winning novelist and script doctor in Hollywood. She released her memoir, The Princess Diarist, earlier this year.
EW Radio (ch. 105) is remembering Fisher today a 3 pm ET. Tune in to hear about her storied career and call in with your favorite memories of the Hollywood icon.
