Cardinals coach Steve Wilks looks to limit Chiefs’ possessions
As the Cardinals will see, beating the Chiefs requires an offense that holds the ball as long as possible to minimize the number of chances Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the team’s offense have to score.

Playing solid defense, alone, isn’t enough to stop the ultra-explosive offense of the Kansas City Chiefs.
As other opponents have demonstrated, it requires an offense that holds the ball as long as possible to minimize the number of chances Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs’ offense have to score.
‘We’ve got to do a great job of converting just to sustain drives’
That’s the approach the Arizona Cardinals are planning to take when they face the Chiefs Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I think the biggest thing with me, you’ve got to try to limit possessions,” Cardinals coach Steve Wilks told David Moulton and Mark Dominik on the SiriusXM Blitz. “You’ve got to keep that offense off the field and how you do that, number one, is trying to execute on third down. We’ve got to do a great job of converting just to sustain drives and we’re got to do a great job was getting off the field. That’s the key with this offense.”
‘We’ve got to do a great job of really stopping the big play’
When studying videotape of the Chiefs, it doesn’t take long to recognize what makes their offense so dangerous.
“Mahomes is so dynamic in the way he’s playing at a high-caliber level, and then just the weapons that they have around them,” Wilks said. “I can go on and on with (wide receivers) Tyreek Hill, (Sammy) Watkins, (and tight end Travis) Kelce. So these guys are dynamic. We’ve got do a great job of really stopping the big play. That’s what that’s what they live off of.”
