Maren Morris Reveals Mental Health Struggles Before ‘Push Me Over’ Release

“It was in Toronto last year, we were opening for The Chicks, and a lot of things at home weren’t feeling great and I definitely, during soundcheck, had a bit of a mental … well, it’s just a panic attack,” the 34-year-old singer-songwriter told Lori. “I was able to do the show, but it was a lot of factors.”

Despite her panic attack, Maren pushed herself to move forward with the performance.

“Sometimes life’s not waiting for you to conveniently break down when you’re at home in the comfort of your own bedroom,” she said. “Sometimes you have to put your big girl pants on and go do the show still.”

Maren also reflected on about the difficulties of juggling her career and parenting her son Ryan, Hayes Andrew. “You still have to be a mother, even though maybe everything in your life that day has imploded or that year,” she said. “It’s like, you’re shielding the explosion from a 4-year-old.”

However, she added that she eventually felt “safe” to finally let her emotions flow and allowed herself “to fall apart.” “Like once everything had ended and like everything was finalized. That’s when I was like, ‘OK, now I can cry,’” she said. “Because I feel like we have to be pretty steady through the process.”

Maren Morris on Writing ‘Push Me Over’ with Muna

Additionally, Maren discussed writing her new song, ‘Push Me Over,’ with indie pop band Muna.

“We just had the most fun,” Maren said of working with Muna. “We walked around Silver Lake, got coffees, shot the shit for hours, and then somehow a song was born out of it. We wrote ‘Push Me Over’ the first day. So, I had come in with that chorus. I was like, ‘I have no idea what music will fit around this, but I hear it in my head.’ And Naomi instantly had a track that was perfect for it. And then just built and built and built.”
