Petitions to free Steven Avery & Brendan Dassey ‘miss the mark,’ directors say

If you’ve watched Making A Murderer, you have an opinion about the convictions of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey. The popularity of the documentary has led to countless interviews with key players, pontificating by pundits and — of course — a robust subreddit.

Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos say it was not their objective to declare that the men are innocent, but to show that the state did not prove guilt. Yet at this point, with the overwhelming attention to Making A Murderer, could either man get a fair retrial? The filmmakers are doubtful. They weighed in on Radio Andy‘s Alter Family Politics:

Many viewers are moved by the story, but petitions asking for the pardon of Avery or Dassey “sorta miss the mark,” the directors say. There are better ways to help for those who feel passionate.
