RIP: Guy Clark, Texas songwriting giant, dead at 74

Guy Clark, a giant of Texas songwriting who was central to the Outlaw Country movement of the ‘70s and ‘80s and a mentor to generations of his fellow troubadours, died Tuesday at his home in Nashville after a long period of illness, including a 10-year battle with lymphoma. He was 74.

His rugged, narrative-driven songwriting produced classics like Desperados Waiting for A Train, Rita Ballou, That Old Time Feeling and L.A. Freeway, that were recorded by himself and others, including the Highwaymen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill. His most recent LP, 2013’s My Favorite Picture of You, won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.

Guy Clark made numerous appearances over the years on SiriusXM  Outlaw Country (Ch. 60) , and the channel will air some of his past visits from our vaults and new tribute episodes of weekly shows throughout the weekend.
