Blondie took underground rock literally under ground during an interview with Sandra Bernhard on the New York subway.
The band’s founders Debbie Harry and Chris Stein kicked off the recurring segment Sandyland on the M Train, chatting about their less than glamorous start in the ’70s new wave scene.
“[Our] real first studio experience was with the late Alan Betrock, who was a journalist, and he produced a demo for us, which I don’t even remember what borough that was in,” Stein told Bernhard.
“That was a studio out here somewhere, in Queens I think,” Harry said.
“It was some guy’s basement. He was living with his mother. He had a one-inch multitrack, like a one-inch 8, and that was our first studio experience,” Stein said.
“It was recorded in July or August in the most humid, hot summer,” Harry added. “The recording sounded like we were underwater. It was great.”
Hear Harry discuss being adopted and why she supports Hillary Clinton for president in the clips below.
Sandyland airs daily at 12 p.m. ET on SiriusXM Radio Andy (Ch. 102).
