For the its first event in New York, the UFC went big with three championship fights. In the main event lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will take on featherweight champ Conor McGregor, who is looking to become the first fighter to hold two UFC titles simultaneously. It’s the finesse striking of McGregor vs. the brawling Alvarez. Will we see “The Notorious” McGregor get a first-round knockout as he predicted and make history? Or will Alvarez turn it into a dogfight and play spoiler to the hordes of fans who support the Irishman in droves? In a “champion vs. champion” fight, anything is possible.
In a classic striker vs. grappler matchup, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will make his first title defense against Stephen Thompson, “Wonderboy” Thompson is a world-class striker with an extensive background in kickboxing and an affinity for highlight-reel knockouts. “The Chosen One” is a two-time All-American wrestler, but he also has exceptional speed and knockout power. Woodley will look to impose his will and neutralize Thompson’s striking while Thompson will have to use his range to pick apart Woodley from the outside.
The most dominant female fighter on the planet Joanna Jedrzejczyk will look to defend her strawweight championship against Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a grudge match. The two Polish-born fighters have a history dating back to before either of them was in the UFC. Kowalkiewicz is a polished striker and grappler, but she has a tall task ahead of her. Jedrzejczyk is an absolute beast, plain and simple.
The rest of the card is stacked with multiple former champions and title challengers and current top contenders all over the card, so be sure to tune in on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET! Thanks to everyone who came and partied with SiriusXM Rush!
