Tan France Reveals Why He Came Out to His Family Before ‘Queer Eye’ Premiere
On a recent episode of Radio Andy’s “The Julia Cunningham Show,” special guest Tan France talked about how he came out to his family only weeks before the “Queer Eye” series came out on Netflix.
“I thought that ‘Queer Eye’ was going to be a tiny show that only the gays watched,” Tan told Julia. “Then, Netflix was like, ‘Hey, just so you know, we’re planning on this being a massive global show and we’re doing a big push, so your family is going to find out. You definitely want to come out to them real quick.’ … It was a lot. It was intense.”
Tan said it took six months until his family finally watched the show.
“They were just in complete shock that I would be so public with anything because I’d never said I wanted to be an entertainer — ’cause I didn’t,” he said. “And, so, yeah, they were in complete shock. And then they watched the show, and they’re like, ‘Oh, we can get behind this. You’re just being yourself on TV. Like, we know this version of you.'”
Tan added, “They were really supportive, but, yeah, all those years of faking it, like, just pretending to be straight, really prepares you for doing it on camera. And, so, I will say that I know this is going to sound silly, but the pretending to be straight on camera was the easiest part of the acting job.”
In a departure from reality TV, Tan’s latest on-screen project is a guest starring role in Hulu’s new “Deli Boys” comedy series, out today (March 6).
“The Julia Cunningham Show” is a live, one-hour pop culture and entertainment show airing weekdays at 3pm ET/12pm PT from the SiriusXM LA Studios. Stream full episodes anytime on the SiriusXM app.
