The Chainsmokers reveal the inspiration for ‘Closer’ and top tracks from this week’s YouTube EDM 15 LIVE

The Chainsmokers were doing just fine hosting BPM’s EDM 15 from the road, but they pulled fans closer during a special broadcast at YouTube Studios in New York.

Drew Taggart and Alex Pall introduced this week’s top tracks during an intimate conversation with SiriusXM subscribers, hyping emerging DJs and answering questions about their own work — like the process behind their unstoppable chart-topper Closer.

During their tour last fall, Taggart and Freddy Kennett of Louis the Child produced the drop of the song, and the next day, he “couldn’t stop listening to it.”

And Halsey’s verse about “that Blink-182 song” stemmed from a real session with producer Shaun Frank.

“He came in and we had been listening to all this Blink-182 and Dashboard Confessional and all these guys that just kind of tell it how it is,” Taggart said, adding that Miguel’s single Coffee also inspired him. “I liked how he kind of had a very vivid sex scene but didn’t really talk about the sex … and I was like I want to do a song kind of very visual like that’s an unsexy sex scene, and I want to talk to someone that I’m instead of in love with, I’m indifferent to. The song’s a culmination of pretty much all my ex-girlfriends and all my old friends.”
