Bursting through with dark eyeliner, skinny jeans and long black bangs, and a Hot Topic shopping habit, “emo” music made its way into the mainstream in the mid-2000s. Short for “emotional” or “emotional hardcore,” the genre’s roots actually date back to the early 1980s in Washington, D.C., having emerged from the city’s hardcore punk scene as a subgenre of post-hardcore.
SiriusXM’s new channel, The Emo Project (Streaming Ch. 713), honors the genre’s roots, celebrates its heyday and it promotes its continued presence in modern music. Some of the artists you’ll hear on The Emo Project include Taking Back Sunday, Death Cab For Cutie, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, AFI, Brand New and Blink-182.
“Music from our scene hasn’t quite fit in anywhere on the radio for a while”
“Music from our scene hasn’t quite fit in anywhere on the radio for a while, so it’s awesome that we finally have a home!” says Emo Project programmer Jacquelin Wilding. “We pay tribute to our roots with The Promise Ring and Sunny Day Real Estate. And, of course, we play everything from our mid-2000s heyday, when My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy ruled the world.
She continued: “But this is a scene that is still very much alive and well, with artists like State Champs and Neck Deep totally crushing it worldwide. Fans of these genres are some of the most dedicated you’ll ever find, and I’m so excited to see how this channel evolves with them!”
