“Drew Barrymore” — SZA
Released in 2017, SZA’s R&B hit is, of course, named after the iconic actress. With lyrics like “I’m so ashamed of myself” and “I’m sorry I’m not more attractive,” the song tells a narrative of vulnerability and low self-esteem. These are attributes are synonymous with Barrymore’s roles in the ’80s and ’90s, including those in Never Been Kissed and Poison Ivy. It definitely goes a long way to explaining the inspiration behind the track’s name. Users are focusing on the lyric, “I get so lonely, I forget what I’m worth,” and joking about how relatable it is for past friendships and relationships. SZA is no stranger to popularity on TikTok either as she topped the trends in December 2022 too!

“Holi” — Ramesh Raj Bhattarai
Usually celebrated in March, Holi is one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar. Also known as the Festival of Colors, Holi is celebrated with music, dancing, and throwing colored dye. Given the vibrancy and joy associated with the festival, it’s unsurprising that users are taking to TikTok to share clips from their celebrations. This 2019 song by Nepali singer Ramesh Raj Bhattarai, then, is the perfect track to accompany these videos!

“Be My Baby” — The Ronettes
Often ranked as one of the greatest songs of the ’60s, it’s unsurprising that this 1963 hit remains popular to this day. Its classic doo-wop sound has inspired many artists since its release, especially Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. The song continues to inspire today in the world of TikTok. “Be My Baby” is especially popular with users sharing nail art, but is also commonly used in videos across the wider genre of beauty TikToks. Whatever kind of self-care you prefer, we all love a song that makes us feel good!

Ready to get funky? Good, because it’s impossible not to dance along to this 2000 hit! Whether you first heard it at a school dance, in a club, or on the radio, DJ Casper took the US by storm with this bop. Fun fact: this song was originally intended as a step aerobics routine for DJ Casper’s nephew, who was a personal trainer at a fitness club! TikTok users are particularly focused on the lyric “how low can you go,” pairing it with humorous videos joking about everything from their expectations to their attention span.

“Time of the Season” — The Zombies
Released in 1968, The Zombies’ psychedelic hit quickly became one of their most popular songs, as well as a genre mainstay. Usage of the sound has hit almost every corner of TikTok, making it one of the most varied and diverse songs on this list! As well as appearing in videos marking seasonal changes, the sound has featured in TikToks about farming, cars, cooking, and beauty. One TikToker has even made it the soundtrack for her 47-part series entitled “Celebrities you probably didn’t know were hot.” Talk about versatility!
