While you were sleeping: Breanna Stewart leads UConn to historic fourth national title, Warriors’ run at history in jeopardy

Good morning! A lot happens in sports, even when you’re busy doing other non-sports-y stuff. So here are the top headlines and moments from yesterday, in case you missed anything while you were watching the finale of American Crime Story.

UConn wins fourth straight National Championship

The UConn women’s basketball team completed its quest for history, winning its fourth straight National Championship with an 82-51 win over Syracuse on Tuesday. Coach Geno Auriemma passed legendary coach John Wooden by winning his 11th NCAA Division I college basketball championship.

Senior Breanna Stewart completed her decorated collegiate career with a fourth straight Final Four Most Outstanding Player award, putting up 24 points, 10 rebounds six assists and three blocks in her final game as a Huskie. Stewart and fellow senior Moriah Jefferson and redshirt junior Morgan Tuck are the only players, male or female, to win four consecutive college basketball national titles. Stewart finishes an outstanding career with a record of 151 wins and just five losses and 2,676 points, 1,179 rebounds, 426 assists and 414 blocks. The players shared a cool moment in the post-game celebration by “knighting” each other:

‘Dubs take a tumble

The Warriors seem to be running on fumes at the end of the season as they suffered an overtime loss at home to the Timberwolves, 124-117. Golden State gave up 24 turnovers as Minnesota overcame a 17-point deficit in the second half. The T’Wolves got a career-high 35 points from Shabazz Muhammad, 32 points from Andrew Wiggins and 20 points and 12 rebounds from prohibitive rookie-of-the-year favorite Karl-Anthony Towns.

At one point this season, it seemed like Golden State was all-but-guaranteed to break Chicago’s NBA record of 72 wins, but now the team must win each of it’s final four games to get to 73. With two games against the Spurs left on the schedule, that won’t be an easy task.
