While you were sleeping: Lakers, Padres historically bad, 2016 Masters coverage

Good morning! A lot happens in sports, even when you’re busy doing other non-sports-y stuff. So here are the top headlines and moments from yesterday, in case you missed anything while you were watching Broad City.

Lakers set franchise mark for futility

The countdown to Kobe Bryant’s retirement is now down to four games. The Lakers suffered their 62nd loss of the season to the Clippers, 91-81, setting the franchise record for most losses in a season. It’s tough to see one of the greats go out like this, but we knew we couldn’t expect too much from the rebuilding Lakers. Bryant gave a candid assessment of Los Angeles’ futility, saying, “You either win a championship or you’re in the same boat we’re in.” Real talk.

Padres set MLB mark for futility

The MLB season just started, but teams are already setting records. The San Diego Padres suffered a 7-0 loss to the Dodgers which was their third straight shutout loss, setting the MLB record with 27 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season. The previous mark was 26 by the 1943 St. Louis Browns. We know you’re tired of the “Crying Jordan” memes, but is there a more apt way to summarize the Padres’ futility? I think not. In any case, at least Padres’ fans can take heart in having one of MLB’s nine best stadiums as voted on by our MLB Network Radio (Ch. 89, Sirius 209) experts. Check out the whole list here.
