While you were sleeping: Warriors destroy the Cavs, No. 1 Oklahoma goes down

Good morning! A lot happens in sports, even when you’re not watching, so here are the top headlines and moments from yesterday, in case you missed anything while you were watching Love & Hip Hop.

Warriors destroy the Cavaliers in Cleveland

So much for that heavyweight fight we expected to see in Monday’s rematch of the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors walked into Cleveland and gave the Cavaliers a shellacking, 132-98. It was the marquee matchup of the NBA’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Showcase and it couldn’t live up to the billing, thanks to the Cavs’ inability to keep up with the Dubs, who jumped out to a 70-44 lead at halftime.

Stephen Curry dropped 35 points in 28 minutes as Golden State moved to 38-4. LeBron James was held to 16 points for the 28-11 Cavs. Their duel is pretty much summed up in these vids where James shoves Curry to the ground in frustration and Curry later getting revenge.

Kemba leaves Jazz singing the blues after 52-point explosion

The Warriors’ beatdown of the Cavs wasn’t the only surprise that the NBA’s MLK Day smorgasbord offered up. Down in Charlotte, Kemba Walker hung 52 points on Rudy Gobert and Utah in a double overtime game that the Hornets won 124-119. It was a final statement from Walker, who has made it clear he wants to be an all star, before the ASG polls closed Monday night. Maybe you’ll get selected by the coaches to be a backup, Kemba!

Number 1 goes up, Number 1 goes down

Yet another number-one ranked men’s basketball team went down. Oklahoma, in its first day at the top of the poll, became the third No. 1 team to fall in the state of Iowa, losing 82-77 to No. 19 Iowa State. Earlier this season, Northern Iowa downed North Carolina and Iowa beat Michigan State.

Sooners star Buddy Hield had a game-high 27 points and Isaiah Cousins added 26. The Cyclones were led by Georges Niang (22 points), Abel Nader (20) and Monte Morris (20), who knocked down this go-ahead jumper in the final minute with ice in his veins to seal the win.

Justin Upton, Tigers agree to six-year deal

Free-agent outfielder Justin Upton reached a deal with the Detroit Tigers for six years and $132.75 million. The contract includes an opt-out after the second year. The 28-year-old Upton is a three-time All-Star and batted .251 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs last season with the San Diego Padres.

This deal along with Chris Davis agreeing to re-sign with the Baltimore Orioles leaves Yoenis Cespedes as the biggest bat still on the free-agent market.
