While you were sleeping: Warriors, Thunder’s epic duel, Beast Mode retiring?

Good morning! A lot happens in sports, even when you’re busy doing other non-sports-y stuff. In this case, you were probably gearing up for one of the biggest sporting events of the year in Super Bowl 50. So here are the top headlines and moments from this weekend, in case you missed anything while you were preparing your famous seven-layer dip for your Super Bowl party.

Warriors. Thunder. WCF Preview?

Saturday night saw a marquee matchup in the NBA as the Oklahoma City Thunder visited the Golden State Warriors. The ‘Dubs continued their hot streak at home with a 116-108 victory – their 41st straight regular-season Dub at Oracle Arena. The game had a playoff-like atmosphere with Golden State jumping out to a large lead before Oklahoma City mounted a furious comeback to make it a nail-biter toward the end.

Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant engaged in a very entertaining duel with Curry posting 26 points, 10 assists and six rebounds and Durant pouring in 40 points and 14 rebounds. If these two teams meet for a seven-game series in the postseason, it would feel like Christmas everyday. Check the highlights:

Beast Mode hanging it up?

It looks like we’ve seen the last of Beast Mode. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch hinted at retirement Sunday night, tweeting a picture of hanging cleats and a peace-sign emoji.

Seahawks teammates seemed to confirm the retirement with tweets saluting Lynch throughout the night. If this is it for Lynch, we’ll always be able to remember him by watching and re-watching this epic run:

New UFC welterweight contender

Our must-see moment of the weekend comes from UFC Fight Night 82, as Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson emerged as a top contender in the welterweight division with a first-round TKO of Johny Hendricks. Thompson made the fight look easy with a masterful performance, using his karate-style to control distance and get the finish. Check the highlights:

In case you don’t know, this is important for a myriad of reasons. Hendricks is the former welterweight champion and would’ve been on his way to a trilogy fight with current champ Robbie Lawler had he came out with a victory. Lawler’s current options are now a rematch with Carlos Condit, against whom he won a split-decision after an epic war in January, a fight with Tyronn Woodley, who has earned a title shot but has a style that doesn’t make for an exciting fight, and Wonderboy, who would make for a highly-interesting style match-up. Whereas Woodley is a more wrestling-based fighter who would look to grapple with Lawler, Thompson is a pure striker. He and the hard-hitting Lawler can put on a show.
