Backspin honors Phife Dawg with tribute specials all weekend

Following A Tribe Called Quest co-founder Phife Dawg’s passing earlier this week, we’ve been walking down memory lane with old audio from our archives. Over the years, Phife Dawg has come through our studios to talk about his music, life and legacy. Now we’re bringing those stories out of the vault with specials all weekend long on Backspin (Ch. 43) in honor of the hip-hop legend.

From discussions with ATCQ documentarian Michael Rapaport to mixes from the DJs he inspired to remembrances from fans, friends and more, we’ll be dedicating the next few days to one of the greats.

Beats, Rhymes and Life Takeover

Director Michael Rapaport and the late legendary emcee Phife Dawg took over Backspin a few years back to discuss the documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. It’s an “Award Tour” through hip hop classics Phife and Rapaport love.

Phife “Sports & Hip Hop” Takeover of Backspin

The late great Phife (of the legendary A Tribe Called Quest) was a basketball coach, hosted his own sports show and took over Backspin in 2012. Hear an encore of this special which includes who his favorite teams were, who he thought was the best athlete on the mic, and what hip-hop he played to get up for the big game!
