Mark Dominik: Aaron Donald deal with Rams ‘where I thought it would be’

Former NFL General Manager Mark Dominik wasn’t the least bit surprised by the monster, six-year, $135-million contract the Los Angeles Rams gave defensive tackle Aaron Donald Friday.

While co-hosting on the SiriusXM Blitz, Dominik said he saw the annual average of $22.5 million as being right what he thought it would be.

‘The Rams, by the way they re-did some contracts, probably were trying to take a little bit more money in the early first couple of years’

“I’m not surprised at $22.5 million,” Dominik said. “I think the Rams, by the way they re-did some contracts, probably were trying to take a little bit more money in the early first couple of years like they have done with like (running back Todd) Gurley and other players to make sure they can budget for their quarterback. That’s a smart, strategic play.”

Dominik offered his take on the likely back-and-forth between the two sides.

‘The Rams are in a really good spot now’

“I’m sure the agent started at $24-$25 million and the Rams started at $20 million and they get to that middle spot where they say, ‘You know what? Why bother with it? If we can get it done, let’s get it done,'” Dominik said. “And the Rams are in a really good spot right now. They’re building a lot of momentum in a massive market and everything’s going right.”
