About the 1995 Seattle Mariners
The 1995 Seattle Mariners season holds immense significance in baseball history for several reasons.
Mariners owners wanted a new stadium and needed voters to approve a tax increase to pay for it or for lawmakers to come up with another way to fund the stadium. Without a new stadium, the team was widely expected to move to Tampa.
It was a transformative year for the Mariners franchise. After years of struggling and being perceived as a perennial underdog, the 1995 season marked a turning point. Led by manager Lou Piniella and a talented roster that included stars like Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, and Edgar Martinez, the Mariners showcased their potential and emerged as a formidable team in the American League.
Their success on the field — particularly their memorable come-from-behind victories and late-season heroics — captivated fans and brought a renewed sense of optimism and excitement to Seattle.
The 1995 season is also remembered for the Mariners’ incredible playoff run, including their thrilling American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. Down 2-0 in the series, the Mariners fought back and won the next three games, culminating in the unforgettable Game 5. It was in that decisive game that Edgar Martinez hit “The Double” in the bottom of the 11th inning, driving in the winning runs and securing the Mariners’ spot in the American League Championship Series.
This iconic moment, combined with the team’s overall resilience and never-give-up attitude, galvanized not only the city of Seattle but also the baseball world, as the Mariners’ playoff run captured the imagination of fans and etched their place in baseball history.
By the end of the season, politicians had no choice but to approve a plan to pay for a new stadium and players on the team still take pride in helping to save baseball in Seattle.
