Mark Dominik: Cardinals GM Steve Keim ‘should know exactly’ what he wants to do with top pick

Mark Dominik doesn’t believe there is any mystery regarding what the Arizona Cardinals will do with the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft.

Dominik, former general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said he can’t fathom Cardinals GM Steve Keim and coach Kliff Kingsbury having any uncertainty about their intentions.

‘I can’t imagine Steve Keim at this point walking into Coach Kingsbury and saying, ‘Look, we’re still debating what we want to do here’

They’re either going to do the expected and select former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray or one of the highly touted defensive linemen, such as former Ohio State star Nick Bosa.

“They should have their idea set. And if they’re not taking the quarterback, then now it’s a matter of, ‘How do we subtly shop the pick without the whole world knowing that we’re not taking him? And and how do we want to handle this?’ But I think that they’ve made their mind up.”

“The truth is, I think the only thing that’s truly set right now would be what Arizona is going to do,” Dominik said while co-hosting the SiriusXM Blitz with Bruce Murray. “I can’t imagine Steve Keim at this point walking into (the office of) Coach Kingsbury and saying, ‘Look, we’re still debating what we want to do here. Should we take Kyler? Or should we take the defensive lineman? What should we do?’

‘They should know exactly what they want to do, in terms of the first pick’

“They should have their idea set. And if they’re not taking the quarterback, then now it’s a matter of, ‘How do we subtly shop the pick without the whole world knowing that we’re not taking him? And and how do we want to handle this?’ But I think that they’ve made their mind up. That’s the only place (in the draft) I would sit there and say, a hundred percent, that that should be set. They should know exactly what they want to do, in terms of thefirst pick.”

In fact, Dominik is convinced, at this point, Keim is more focused on the Cardinals’ second-round choice than the top pick.

‘I think that there’s always a little tweak you could do’

“Now it’s more of making sure you’re comfortable with what’s going to happen as the draft unfolds in front of you,” Dominik said. “And do you want to move around? And how do you want to move around? The board still, to me is always a little fluid. People who sit there and say, ‘Well, our board’s locked in,’ I just don’t think you should ever have your board locked in until Round One starts.

“I think that there’s always a little tweak you could do. And it may be moving a guy from the 71st spot to the 69th spot, but that might make a difference in the third of fourth round. Those are just things you’ve got to continue to debate with yourself, but also don’t paralyze yourself with.”
