Brady Quinn: Lamar Jackson’s visit to Patriots ‘makes sense for a lot of reasons’
Brady Quinn totally gets it, even if there are many other people who might not. To the former NFL quarterback, Lamar Jackson’s pre-draft visit to the New England Patriots “makes sense for a lot of reasons,” Quinn said while co-hosting with Bruce Murray on the SiriusXM Blitz.

To the former NFL quarterback, Lamar Jackson’s pre-draft visit to the New England Patriots “makes sense for a lot of reasons,” Quinn said while co-hosting with Bruce Murray on the SiriusXM Blitz.
‘The fact that they only get 30 (pre-draft visits) and this is a guy that they wanted to bring in for a visit, it tells you something’
Jackson, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Louisville, is considered one of the draft’s five or six best players at his position. And Quinn said it was hardly unrealistic to see him as a potential successor to Tom Brady.
“The fact that they only get 30 (pre-draft visits) and this is a guy that they wanted to bring in for a visit, it tells you something,” Quinn said. “Maybe they would look at him potentially being the successor to Tom Brady. And maybe (offensive coordinator) Josh McDaniels, who I was with in Denver, who I remember looking at installs for Tim Tebow in a specific package that played to his strengths and skill set, who’s one of the best offensive minds that I was around in the NFL, maybe he’s got a little something set aside or something a little special for someone like Lamar Jackson either as a specific package or, eventually, when Tom Brady decides to hang it up and retire.
‘This guy who can prepare you in practice pretty much better than anyone else for Russell Wilson, for Cam Newton, for any of these more mobile quarterbacks’
“So it’s not the most impossible thing to look at and say, ‘Yeah, maybe it would make sense taking a talent like Lamar Jackson because, a.) provided that Tom Brady’s healthy, he’s going to be the quarterback for at least a year or two. And, then, b.) you’ve got this guy who can prepare you in practice pretty much better than anyone else for Russell Wilson, for Cam Newton, for any of these more mobile quarterbacks that kind of fit into the category who can move around and kind of be a running quarterback and give you that look.”
On top of all that, it’s reasonable to think Bill Belichick, the Patriots’ ultra-meticulous coach, is being proactive in gathering as much information possible on players who could potentially end up with AFC East opponents.
‘They better know all they can about this young man if they’re going to have to play him twice a year’
“They wanted to kick the tires on this guy because if they don’t take him, there’s the potential another team’s going to take him,” Quinn said. “Like Buffalo’s sitting at 12 right now, they’re in the division, so they better know all they can about this young man if they’re going to have to play him twice a year, at least for the foreseeable future.
“I’m not really reading too much into it. I just think if they ended up selecting him, or even just the fact they brought him in at all, it’s kind of something that New England would do.”
