NFL Radio - TCT - San Diego Chargers - Tom TelescoGeneral Manager Tom Telesco (photo on left) readily admits the Los Angeles Chargers didn’t have “the most sexy” picks in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft, especially with the selections of guards Forrest Lamp, of Western Kentucky, and Dan Feeney, of Indiana.

“But two guys that can really help, we think,” Telesco told Alex Marvez and Bill Polian on Late Hits.

‘Both bring some youth, bring some athleticism, bring some smarts and toughness’

The Chargers began the draft with one of the sexier picks on the board, Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams. Then, they focused on getting a couple of players who can help give Philip Rivers the time to find Williams and his other receivers.

“Both bring some youth, bring some athleticism, bring some smarts and toughness to our offensive line,” Telesco said. “And both have some versatility to play some different spots, I think, for us. But with Forrest, he was a left tackle in college and, shoot, he probably could go out there and play that a little bit at this level, but he doesn’t really have the dimensions you typically look for with the length and the height (6-foot-4) there.

‘We probably see (Lamp) as guard right now. We’ll see where he ends up down the road’

“But he has great feet, great feel for angles. We probably see him as a guard right now. We’ll see where he ends up down the road.”

With the Chargers owning the seventh overall pick, Telesco felt it was natural for them to go in the direction of a playmaker. And that took them right to Williams.

‘(Williams) can beat press, he’s a good athlete, he’s flexible’

“We felt in the first round, and certainly in the top 10, we’re looking for a high-impact guy, high character, and he fit both of those for us,” Telesco said. “His style of a receiver is different than some of them that we have now. He can complement Keenan (Allen) and Tyrell Williams and Travis Benjamin and Dontrelle Inman as well as far as a big, outside receiver. He can beat press, he’s a good athlete, he’s flexible. He’s going to need to work on his route-running at this level, which, really, all college receivers have to do.

“But he’s got great eye-hand coordination and ability to adjust to the ball and good timing. And some of that comes from his basketball background as far as attacking the ball in the air.”
