FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 Finals
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will reach its epic conclusion on Sunday, August 20, when England faces Spain in Sydney.
Match for 3rd Place: Sweden vs. Australia — August 19 at 4am ET
Final: England vs. Spain — August 20 at 6am ET
The tournament, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, hasn’t been without controversy, with surprising losses and incredible underdog stories abound. Despite strong showings in the group stages, the US Women’s team crashed out in the round of 16. They played Sweden on August 6 in a goalless game that ended in a tense penalty shootout, which Sweden won with five penalties to four. Their loss was one of the biggest shocks of the tournament, as the USWNT were aiming for their third World Cup in a row (and fifth overall). To not even reach the quarterfinals was a huge blow for the team.
Another big surprise was the Australian team, known as the Matildas, not reaching the final. The co-hosts put in a great showing during their semi-final match, but two second-half goals from England’s Lionesses denied them a place in the history books.
England’s triumph landed them in their first ever Women’s World Cup Final. It’s also the first time an England soccer team has reached a World Cup Final since 1966. The women’s team is no stranger to this pressure, though — last year they won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 in a tense final against Germany. As the second-ranked team in the world, Germany failing to make it out of this year’s group stages was another shocking upset in a competition rife with them.
Spain defeated Sweden 2-1 in their semi-final, but their route to the final has been anything but smooth. Plagued by unrest and infighting off the pitch, there was initial doubt as to whether they would have a full squad ready for the competition. Despite these setbacks, they have soared through virtually unscathed, and this will also be the women’s team’s first ever appearance in a World Cup final.
It remains to be seen whether England or Spain will take home the biggest trophy in soccer. Find out who ends up on top on Sunday, August 20, with live coverage and analysis on FOX Sports and SiriusXM FC.
