Preston Smith did his homework.

When the former Washington Redskins outside linebacker entered free agency, he looked for new teams that would give him the best chance for success.

‘They’ve got a great team, a prestigious organization’

He found one in the Green Bay Packers.

“Green Bay, I just felt like, was the best fit for me in the process,” Smith told Bruce Murray and Bruce Gradkowski on the SiriusXM Blitz. “They’ve got a lot of young guys that can do a lot of great things. They’ve a great team, a prestigious organization … just a lot of great things about the City of Green Bay that brought me to them.”

“I’ve seen their playing style, the things they did with the previous guys. I thought that their guys played in a nice defense.”

‘I chose the best option for me to go out there and play my best ball’

Among the schemes Smith studied was that of Packers coordinator Mike Pettine. Smith concluded that he’d be able to function with the same effectiveness that he saw from Packer players at his position.

“I chose the best fit for me and my playing style and I chose the best option for me to go out there and play my best ball,” he said. “I’ve seen their system before. I’ve seen their playing style, the things they did with the previous guys. I thought that their guys played in a nice defense.

‘I’m really excited to get to the season and hit the field with these guys’

“It helped their guys play well, and it seemed like there was much going on. I’m really excited to get to the season and hit the field with these guys and go out there and progress towards having a great season and a productive season.”
