As Jerod Mayo prepares for his first NFL season as New England Patriots head coach following Bill Belichick’s 24-season reign, he spoke to SiriusXM NFL Radio during training camp about the team’s four potential quarterbacks: Drake Maye, Joe Milton III, Jacoby Brissett, and Bailey Zappe.

While both Maye and Milton would be rookie quarterbacks, Brissett has been in the league since 2016, and this will be Zappe’s third season with the Patriots. Maye was the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jacoby Brissett’s Leadership

“We always preach [to rookie quarterbacks], ‘Don’t be a repeat-error guy,'” Mayo said. “I will say that Jacoby has done a great job just leading that entire room. You know, a veteran player that — really, he has no ego. Or I shouldn’t say no — he’s able to control his ego. He knows that Drake and Joe Milton and Zappe are all competing to be on this team, and in saying that, he’s still an open book for all of those guys, whether it’s on the field or in the classroom.”

He added, “And remember, he knows this offense. He played in this offense, so he has that understanding. And sometimes it’s better to hear it from one of your teammates, one of your peers, than a coach. And so he’s done a fantastic job doing that.”

Drake Maye’s Best Trait

“Going back to Drake, I would say, look, this guy is ultra, ultra competitive,” Mayo continued. “That was one the traits that I was like, ‘Man, this guy — he’s gonna be good.’ He’s always here all day, and he’s getting better.”
