Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden looks on against the New York Giants during an NFL wildcard football playoff game Sunday Jan 6, 2008 in Tampa, Fla.
Jon Gruden got his start in coaching with the San Francisco 49ers. His first head-coaching job was with the Oakland Raiders.
So his professional history in California is pretty extensive.
‘The state of California, I spent a lot of my coaching career out there’
And that’s what makes it so sad for the ESPN Monday Night Football analyst to see what has happened to some of the notable landmark teams and places in his career, beginning with the Raiders’ eventual move to Las Vegas.
“You know, I’m shocked,” Gruden told Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan on Movin’ The Chains. “The state of California, I spent a lot of my coaching career out there. I got my start with the San Francisco 49ers and they tore down Candlestick. Then I won my first game as an Oakland Raider as a head coach, and the Raiders are leaving.
“And we won our Super Bowl in San Diego (when he was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and that stadium’s being blown up. So I don’t know what the hell’s going on in California.”
