Josh Allen on QB education with Bills: ‘Ultimately, it’s through trial and tribulation’
For Josh Allen, virtually every moment at the Buffalo Bills’ training camp has felt like being in a classroom. Whether he’s on the field or sitting in a meeting, the rookie quarterback finds himself learning something new all the time. And much of that learning comes from making mistakes.
For Josh Allen, virtually every moment at the Buffalo Bills’ training camp has felt like being in a classroom.
Whether he’s on the field or sitting in a meeting, the rookie quarterback finds himself learning something new all the time. And much of that learning comes from making mistakes.
‘The next time I make that play, I’m making sure I’m doing the right thing’
“Obviously, you want to make the right decisions every time you’re out there, but the beauty of this game is you get to practice and make those mistakes, so when you get on the field, you don’t have to make those mistakes,” Allen told Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan during the SiriusXM NFL Radio camp tour stop at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y.. “So as long as we’re learning from what we’re doing and if I throw a pick in this coverage or this concept and I should have checked it down, the next time I make that play, I’m making sure I’m doing the right thing.
“Ultimately, it’s through trial and tribulation, so the more mistakes that I can make now, the better off I’m going to be during games.”
‘Just trying to learn as much as possible’
Allen’s biggest goal is to simply get comfortable with the scheme of new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. He has primarily worked with the third-string offense, but also has occasionally had reps with the starters. When Allen isn’t taking snaps, he’s keeping a close eye on the ones who are, AJ McCarron or Nathan Peterman.
“It’s been awesome,” Allen said. “Sit back there and listen to what Daboll’s saying in the headsets and going through the play like as if I’m in from the sidelines, from behind the line of scrimmage. It’s been awesome just getting in the film room and kind of break down film of what he wants out of us. And then, ultimately, we get to the field just doing those mental reps when I’m not in. And just trying to learn as much as possible is what I’m trying to do right now.”
