Corey Liuget: If the Chargers offer a contract that’s ‘good enough, I’ll take it’

Consider what veteran defensive tackle Corey Liuget, whose contract is expiring as NFL free agency approaches, is seeking from whatever team for which he plays in 2019.

He wants an established quarterback in place. He wants “a chance to get to the dance.”

‘I’m fine with going to hit the open market’

In other words, Liuget would like nothing better than to figure out a way to remain with the Chargers, who have proven Philip Rivers behind center and are coming off a playoff season.

“I know there’s somebody and there’s a team somewhere that believes in me.”

“Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking,” Liuget told Alex Marvez and Kirk Morrison on the SiriusXM Blitz. “If the Chargers come and offer me something here, within the next couple weeks before free agency and if it’s good enough, I’ll take it. But if not, I’m fine with going to hit the open market.

‘Whether it’s the L.A. Chargers or the Oakland Raiders, I don’t care’

“I know there’s somebody and there’s a team somewhere that believes in me. So whether it’s the L.A. Chargers or the Oakland Raiders, I don’t care. Whoever wants me, I’ll go.”

There is, however, the matter of Liuget’s health. He’s recovering from a torn quadriceps injury that required surgery in late November and prematurely ended his 2018 season.

‘Right now, my recovery is going great’

“The injury was something that was happening for quite a while,” Liuget said. “I had an ongoing complication, pretty much a little bone spur growing and it just was cutting into the tendon for like the last three years. And it just basically finally just gave. It finally tore it to the point where it wasn’t going to allow it to take the abuse anymore. And it happened playing against Denver. We’re playing the game and when I went to go make a move … my left foot hit the tackle’s right foot and when I tried to put my right foot back into the ground, it just absorbed all of the force through the ground and the tendon just finally popped.

“I spoke with my doctor. He’s actually writing up a report for teams that are interested in me. And right now my recovery is going great. (This week) I did some sled work. Next week I’ll start doing more running. So, to be honest, I’m on point to recover. The doctor told me maybe in another two months I should be at least 80-90 percent. So I’m looking forward to get into the month of April and May and see how I look.”
