Mike Williams fully expected Chargers to go for two in beating Chiefs

Before the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense took the field with 2:37 left on the clock and the Kansas City Chiefs holding a 28-21 lead at Arrowhead Stadium Thursday night, Mike Williams turned to fellow receiver Travis Benjamin and made a prediction. It came true.

“I was like, ‘Uh, we’re going to come out here on this drive, we’re going to score, we need to go for two,’” Williams told SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Alex Marvez after the game. “He was like, ‘Nah, we don’t need to go for two. This is a divisional game, we need to win.’ I said, ‘Yeah, we can go for two and win it.’ He was like, ‘Alright, we’ll see.’”

‘So when I scored the touchdown, they called for two points and I looked at Travis like, ‘I told you”

“The (Chiefs’) secondary just rolled late. Looked like they were a little confused, busting the coverage.”

Sure enough, after Williams caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers with four seconds remaining, he also caught a pass for a two-point conversion to give the Chargers a remarkable 29-28 comeback win.

“So when I scored the touchdown, they called for two points and I looked at Travis like, ‘I told you,’” Williams said. “And Coach (Anthony Lynn) called a great play and I made the play on the two-point conversion, and the rest is history. The (Chiefs’) secondary just rolled late. Looked like they were a little confused, busting the coverage. I just needed to make a play for my teammates. That was the main thing. The ball was in the air, find any way to make the play.”

‘We came out here, a great environment to play football, a prime-time game, everybody watching, and just wanted to come out victorious’

What sort of statement did the Chargers’ win make?

“That we can compete in the league,” Williams said. “We came out here, a great environment to play football, a prime-time game, everybody watching, and just wanted to come out victorious.”
