Lynn would be equally happy for that to continue to be the case beyond the 2019 season, the final year of Rivers’ contract with the team.

‘He’s going to be here as long as he’s playing at the level he’s playing’

During an appearance on The Opening Drive, with Bill Lekas and Charlie Weis, Lynn said the subject of a contract extension for Rivers has been discussed.

“We’re doing what we can to build the best team around him and we’re definitely going to take care of him at some point.”

“You know, there’s no timetable on that right now,” Lynn said. “But, yes, that has come up. And, you know, he’s our quarterback, he’s going to be here as long as he’s playing at the level he’s playing. And, yeah, I mean, (an extension has) been talked about, no doubt about it.”

‘He wants us to be able to build a team’

Lynn made it clear that he thinks Rivers and the club would be on the same page as far as working out a deal that would be friendly enough to the Chargers’ salary cap so they could add and keep pieces to allow them to compete at a high level.

“Philip is also a very unselfish young man,” the coach said. “He wants us to be able to build a team. He’s let that be known. So we’re doing what we can to build the best team around him and we’re definitely going to take care of him at some point.”
