Rams’ Jared Goff on coach Sean McVay’s creativity & his play-action game

Opposing defenses have been giving it their best shot. So far, though, nothing has worked in their efforts to even slow down, let alone stop, the Los Angeles Rams’ high-flying offense.

Opposing defenses have been giving it their best shot.

So far, though, nothing has worked in their efforts to even slow down, let alone stop, the Los Angeles Rams’ high-flying offense.

‘He does a great job adjusting and figuring out what’s the best play for what they’re trying to do’

On the way to their 7-0 start, the Rams have managed to rank at or near the top in a variety of offensive categories. It helps that they have highly talented players, such as quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley. It also helps that they have one of the game’s more creative and effective offensive schemers and play-callers in coach Sean McVay.

“As the game goes on, I think he does a great job adjusting and figuring out what’s the best play for what they’re trying to do to us,” Goff told Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan on Movin’ The Chains. “And throughout the season, we’ve really seen a multitude of things to try to stop us and so we’ve had to adjust throughout games and try to figure out what’s the best way to go about it. And he’s done a great job with that, whether it’s in the first half or the second half.”

‘We definitely try to make a lot of stuff look the same’

One place the Rams excel is in putting together a play-action game that does a good job of keeping defenses off balance by making itself hard — if not impossible — to detect before the snap.

“Yeah, no doubt, we definitely try to make a lot of stuff look the same and it’s no different (with) the play-action stuff and trying to marry the run with the pass and formation and dress it up in certain ways to make it look the same,” Goff said. “And then it definitely helps having Todd Gurley in the backfield scaring the defense, bringing them downhill and opening up those spots.”

‘Just understanding the intent of every play and understanding what we’re trying to get done’

Where does Goff think he has grown the most in the past two seasons under McVay?

“I think just understanding the intent of every play and understanding what we’re trying to get done and accomplish on every play,” he said. “And then, with that, understanding the defense and understanding which player we’re trying to manipulate and what type of defense we’re trying to manipulate and how it all works together.”
