Mark Dominik on Cardinals replacing Bruce Arians: ‘They’re in a lot of trouble’
The Arizona Cardinals might very well find themselves scrambling for a replacement for Bruce Arians, who announced his retirement from coaching Monday.
The Arizona Cardinals might very well find themselves scrambling for a replacement for Bruce Arians, who announced his retirement from coaching Monday.
That’s because the Cardinals have a major question mark at quarterback. Aging Carson Palmer, who missed more than half the season with a broken arm, doesn’t look like an answer. And there isn’t anyone waiting in the wings to take over.
‘It’s not a great spot, really, because of the quarterback situation’
On top of that, the Cardinals, with their 8-8 finish, were just good enough this season to be out of range to select a quarterback near the top of the draft.
“It’s not a great spot, really, because of the quarterback situation just in general,” analyst Mark Dominik said while co-hosting with Bruce Murray on the SiriusXM Blitz. “And they’re just good enough where they’re in that purgatory now with their quarterback problems of not being able to be in a high spot to be able to get one. But, yet, in that division, if you don’t have one, you’re dead now.
‘He’s like, ‘As soon as Carson Palmer goes down, we got no shot”
“I mean, they’re in a lot of trouble now in Arizona, actually, and that might be part of the reason why Bruce Arians had some health issues over the last couple of years, because he’s like, ‘As soon as Carson Palmer goes down, we got no shot,’ because it shows you just how much the playing field was sloped against them.”
Dominik wasn’t exactly shocked by Arians’ decision to retire.
‘He realized that this was not healthy for him to keep going’
“This was something I’d kind of heard on the down-low, also, was the fact that his health was really important to him and that he realized that this was not healthy for him to keep going,” Dominik said. “So I’m not surprised. … I wonder if (offensive coordinator) Harold Goodwin, who’s interviewed before for a possible coaching job, might be a leader as a possible candidate.”
