Randy Moss had the numbers that said he should be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
What the star receiver wanted to make clear Saturday after being voted in as a first-ballot finalist was what was behind the statistics.
‘There’s a lot of sacrifice within a 14-year professional career’
And that, as Moss told Howard Balzer and Gil Brandt, was a tremendous amount of sweat equity.
“I think that I put the work in,” Moss said. “Of course, there’s a lot of people that you owe credit to — coaches, family, teammates. “My biggest thing is always tell the young generation, the new, upcoming ballplayers that hard work does pay off. And there’s a lot of sacrifice within a 14-year professional career, sacrificing from leisure and pleasure, but the main thing that really stood out to me was that I had to sacrifice from my family in order to continue to make the money, to be able to have this opportunity to be a Hall of Famer.
‘There was just a lot of bumps in the roads’
“So there was just a lot of bumps in the roads that I had to overcome and now. Hard work pays off, and it paid off.”
Moss said he had a great appreciation for what the Hall voters went through during an eight-hour meeting at the Airport Marriott in Bloomington, Minn.. on the eve of Super Bowl LII.
‘I understand that process and I just didn’t want to get caught up in that process’
“The process is a hard process for the voters to be able just to vote guys in,” Moss said.
“And I understand the process and I just didn’t want to get caught up in that process throughout the day, so when I talk about being able to develop patience, kids are the first thing that can help you develop patience.
“Being able to work on the TV now with ESPN, my colleagues, stuff like that, you have to be able to have patience because you don’t even know where it can go from there.”
